The separate collection of organic waste in 25 municipalities within the Vega Sierra Elvira Consortium has seen a remarkable 350% growth in the first three months of 2026, solidifying a more sustainable management model.

The Consortium for the Development of Vega Sierra Elvira, in collaboration with the managing company Sercovira, has successfully consolidated the separate collection service for organic waste (FORM) in 25 municipalities. Since its progressive launch between November 2025 and March 2026, a total of 317.56 tons of organic waste have been collected.
The increase has been particularly significant in 2026, rising from 57.78 tons collected in 2025 to 259.78 tons in the first three months of the following year. This figure represents an increase of over 350%, confirming the success of the “fifth container” implementation and the progress towards a more sustainable waste management model, in line with European objectives.

"This increase demonstrates that we are moving in the right direction. We remain deeply committed to improving the service, with new investments in equipment, infrastructure, and, above all, in awareness campaigns to continue increasing citizen participation and improving the quality of separation."

This progress has been made possible by a considerable technical, economic, and management effort by the Consortium, which has coordinated the implementation of the service in most of the area's municipalities that already have this system. To ensure proper functioning, grants totaling 1.6 million euros have been managed, providing the system with the necessary resources.
Developed actions include the distribution of aerated domestic bins and compostable bag packages to households, the installation of new specific organic waste containers in public areas, and the incorporation of specialized collection vehicles. Additionally, an information and awareness campaign has been carried out to promote correct source separation and increase neighborhood participation.
With the implementation of this service in 25 municipalities, the Vega Sierra Elvira Consortium is positioned as a reference area in the province of Granada for the adoption of the fifth container, joining other localities that have already moved towards more responsible waste management.
