The Mayor of Alhaurín el Grande, Anthony Bermúdez, highlighted housing and mobility challenges in the Valle del Guadalhorce during his participation in the Greencities congress and the Forum of Mayors of the Malaga metropolitan area, held at FYCMA. The municipality aims to strengthen its position in the metropolitan area and improve the quality of life for its residents.
Within the framework of the 'Metrópolis Global' Metropolitan Forum, Bermúdez spoke on a panel with the mayors of Alhaurín de la Torre and Coín. He noted that the population of the Valle del Guadalhorce has grown by 16% in the last decade, leading to increased demand for housing and mobility needs. Specifically, Alhaurín el Grande's Municipal Housing Plan anticipates the construction of at least 1,000 homes between 2025 and 2030. Furthermore, the municipality's vehicle fleet increased by 1,076 vehicles between 2025 and 2026, underscoring the mobility challenge.
Given this situation, the mayor advocated for addressing these challenges from a supramunicipal perspective, seeking common solutions for metropolitan issues that individual municipalities cannot tackle alone. Housing and mobility, closely linked, were central to the debate. Bermúdez proposed improving connections between the Valley municipalities and Malaga capital, suggesting the reinforcement of the Metropolitan Transport Consortium with new routes and extended operating hours.
During the event, progress from the Metropolitan Forum was also discussed, including the development of a provincial map of available land and housing in Malaga's first ring, encompassing 22 municipalities. Institutional representatives present included the delegate for Public Works of the Junta de Andalucía, Mª Rosa Morales, the president of the Provincial Council of Malaga, Francisco Salado, and the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre.
Bermúdez held a meeting with the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, to discuss the future of the C2 commuter train line, proposing to consolidate, expand, and improve its service. The Alhaurín el Grande City Council also plans to create ample, free park-and-ride facilities to facilitate connections with the railway network and the capital.
The mayor asserted Alhaurín el Grande's significant role within the metropolitan area, emphasizing the need for a unified vision amidst population growth and housing demand. Participation in Greencities and the Metropolitan Forum aims to convey the needs of the municipality and the Valle del Guadalhorce to the relevant administrations to enhance residents' quality of life.
