The Castillo del Cante Flamenco Festival celebrated its 51st edition in Ojén, reaffirming its status as one of the most significant flamenco events in Andalusia and Spain. The festival, now over half a century old, maintained its prestige and attracted a large audience, achieving a complete sell-out.
Castillo del Cante is synonymous with history, tradition, and excellence in flamenco. For over five decades, it has preserved the essence of this art form, making Ojén a key meeting point for fans of singing, guitar playing, and dancing. The stage has witnessed performances by legendary artists such as Camarón de la Isla, Carmen Linares, Fosforito, José Menese, Estrella Morente, Miguel Poveda, and Arcángel, among others.
The evening was attended by authorities and representatives of the Malagueñan society, including the mayor of Ojén, Juan Merino Márquez, accompanied by the government team; the territorial delegate for Culture of the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, Carlos García Giménez; Málaga CF board member Antonio Jesús López; the president of the College of Physicians of Málaga, Pedro Navarro Merino; professor Martín Navarro Merino; actor Antonio Coca, and the mayor of Guaro, José Antonio Carabantes.
Master of Ceremonies, Salvador de la Peña, opened the night with an emotional tribute to Antonio Fernández Díaz ‘Fosforito’ and José Domínguez Muñoz ‘El Cabrero’, flamenco figures closely linked to the festival who passed away this year.
The artistic performances began with Miguel Ángel Lara ‘El Canario’, who delivered an authentic and moving recital. The Sevillian singer demonstrated a profound command of traditional flamenco singing, accompanied on guitar by Manuel Jesús Carrillo.
Following this, Manuel Moreno Maya ‘El Pele’, considered a living legend of flamenco, presented a memorable performance. His singing, deep, free, and full of personality, once again proved why he is one of the most unique voices in flamenco, captivating the audience.
During the event, the Ojén City Council presented the Castillo de Oro awards to six residents for their contributions to the festival: Juan Sánchez Márquez (posthumously), Juan Gómez Pacheco, Andrés Gómez Sánchez, Cristóbal Moreno Cuevas, Francisco Manuel Vázquez Suárez, and Bernabé Gómez Zumaquero. Recognition was also given to Daniel Espada Cerón, the creator of this edition's poster.
Singer Aurora Vargas showcased her mastery of cante jondo, delivering a performance of great authenticity and vocal power, accompanied by the sensitive guitar playing of El Perla.
One of the most anticipated moments was the appearance of Israel Fernández, who was met with a standing ovation. The singer from Toledo delivered a performance of immense artistic intensity, highlighting his distinctive voice and a style that blends respect for tradition with unique creative flair, accompanied by the masterful guitar of Diego del Morao.
Local dancer Fina La Churruca concluded the night with a performance marked by strength, elegance, and authenticity, perfectly closing an evening that once again showcased the talent of an artist who proudly represents Ojén.
With this 51st edition, the Castillo del Cante Flamenco Festival has once again confirmed its status as a benchmark in flamenco, bringing together great artists, honoring those who have contributed to its history, and making Ojén the capital of flamenco art for an unforgettable night.
