The town of Cortegana is preparing to host its XXIX Medieval Days, scheduled from August 6 to 9. The event, declared of Andalusian Tourist Interest, will revolve around the theme 'The Eclipse Capture', inspired by the imminent total solar eclipse on August 12, a significant astronomical phenomenon not seen in the Iberian Peninsula with these characteristics for over a century. The central story of this edition will blend mystery, legend, and adventure within the iconic Cortegana Castle.
The plot will transport attendees to an era of superstition and popular beliefs surrounding major astronomical events. The narrative will intertwine magic and intrigue with values such as hope and bravery. The mayor, María del Mar Martín, highlighted the originality of the theme, linked to a historical event and Cortegana's 'Cielos de Sierra Morena' Starlight Reserve, aiming to offer a unique experience combining history, culture, and heritage.
The story will commence at the official inauguration on Thursday, August 6, with a prophecy about the Sun being extinguished over Cortegana Castle, heralding a mysterious 'alchemical eclipse'. An astronomer will attempt to decipher the celestial message while a healer warns of the consequences. Characters such as a witch, an alchemist, and a monk will complete the narrative.
The Councillor for Culture, María del Carmen Carvajal, stated that the story is designed to surprise and move the audience, making each visitor feel part of the adventure. The narration will unfold through a grand parade in the medieval market, culminating at the Castle, where a spell will be cast to save Cortegana's light.
This event, which attracts thousands of visitors, will include the International Sierra Celta Festival. On Friday, August 7, BackWest and Luneris will perform. The night of Saturday, August 8, will feature The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Triquel, and the winner of the Runas Contest from the International Festival of Celtic World in Ortigueira.
The Councillor for Tourism, Víctor Rosa, emphasized the role of the Medieval Days as a tourist driver for Cortegana and the Sierra, projecting the municipality's image. As a prelude, on July 31, the Medievalist Days will be held, focusing on medicine and sorcery in the Middle Ages.
