Raphael, born in Linares in 1943, is preparing for a series of performances across Andalusia that underscore his unwavering dedication to music. The iconic artist will visit Seville on June 18th for the Icónica Santalucía Sevilla Fest, followed by concerts in Jerez on July 4th at the Tio Pepe Festival, Almería on September 19th, Málaga on November 28th, and Granada on December 12th.
With a career spanning over six decades, Raphael describes his relationship with the stage as a transition from initial nervousness to a serenity forged by experience. "I go out with respect, of course, because the stage is always imposing, but also with the tranquility that experience brings," he comments. After each demanding performance, his priority is rest to continue delivering his best.
The artist emphasizes the importance of technical discipline in maintaining his voice over the years, carefully managing rest, hydration, and avoiding excesses. "I have always taken care of my voice. I am very disciplined," he states. Regarding autotune, Raphael is open-minded, considering it a valid tool if used aesthetically, though he personally prefers the natural sound of his voice without effects.
Raphael highlights that music is a universal language capable of conveying emotion beyond linguistic barriers. "The audience connects with the intention, the interpretation, the major or minor chords... it goes beyond language," he explains. In his collaborations, he seeks "authenticity" and "artistic honesty" in other creators.
Significant health challenges he has faced have taught him to "put things into perspective, prioritize, and value what is truly essential much more," placing health, family, and vocation at the core. This perspective allows him to enjoy each concert with a "special serenity" and be aware of the "privilege" of continuing to pursue his passion.
“"Freedom on stage is often built off it. Behind every concert there is work, method, discipline, and consistency. Talent is important, but it's not enough."
The artist insists that stage freedom is founded on rigorous prior work, method, and consistency. "Talent is important, but it's not enough," he asserts, emphasizing the need to be "very rigorous and methodical" to endure in the profession.
His "vocation" continues to be the driving force that awakens Raphael each morning, an enthusiasm he attributes to the audience for their constant support. Looking back at the young man from Linares, he would say: "Keep going, and trust your instinct." He is currently working on new projects, including his upcoming biopic on Netflix, "Aquél," with which he is "very satisfied."
