The new Minister of Public Works, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, has sent a letter to the head of Transport for the central government, Óscar Puente, requesting a working meeting to address the critical traffic situation on the AP-4, the motorway connecting Seville and Cádiz.
The traffic jams recorded, such as the twenty kilometers experienced last Friday during the August holiday departure, have been the trigger for this request. The road, which after its liberalization and the end of tolls has two lanes per direction, suffers from regular congestion affecting thousands of citizens and road safety, especially during holiday periods with the influx of tourists and returns home.
In the letter, the Popular Party official outlines the «significant congestion problems that impact the mobility and safety conditions of thousands of citizens» and calls for «progress in actions to increase the capacity of the AP-4». Given the expectation that definitive works will extend for several years, the minister proposes «evaluating, in parallel, the implementation of urgent provisional measures».
Muñoz-Atanet suggests that the width of the platform, both in shoulders and median, could allow for emergency works to alleviate congestion and temporarily enhance safety. This reflection was previously conveyed by the Junta de Andalucía to the Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, at the recent Sectoral Conference on Transport.
The minister concludes by proposing an urgent working meeting between their teams to analyze possible provisional actions for the AP-4 and to learn about the Ministry's plans for improving both this motorway and the N-IV, given their importance as a corridor.
