Andalusia is facing an extraordinary heat episode that will reach its peak this weekend. The 'heat dome' phenomenon, caused by warm air from North Africa and high pressure systems, is trapping very hot air over the peninsula. Intense solar radiation and poor ventilation have led to heat accumulation at surface level for several consecutive days.
This Friday, May 29th, yellow heat alerts will be active between 14:00 and 20:00 in the campiñas of Córdoba and Sevilla, with predicted highs of 38ºC. On Saturday, May 30th, the alert will extend to Sierra Morena, El Condado, and the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaén. By Sunday, May 31st, thermometers could reach or exceed 39ºC in these areas, even hitting 40ºC in Sevilla and Córdoba.
Temperatures will rise throughout the weekend. On Friday, highs will be 38ºC in Córdoba and Sevilla, and 36ºC in Jaén. Coastal areas will see more moderate temperatures, around 29ºC in Málaga or 28ºC in Almería. On Saturday, widespread tropical nights are expected with lows up to 24ºC in Jaén and 21ºC in Almería, while highs will climb to 39ºC in Sevilla and Córdoba, and 37ºC in Jaén. On Sunday, minimums will continue to rise, with 23ºC in Jaén, 22ºC in Málaga, and 21ºC in Cádiz. Maximums could reach 40ºC in Sevilla and Córdoba, and 37ºC in Huelva and Jaén.
Saturday's forecast also includes the possibility of stormy showers in the mountain ranges, particularly in Sierra Morena, which could be accompanied by strong wind gusts, including dry thunderstorms. The sky will generally remain mostly clear or with few clouds, with daytime cloud development in mountainous areas.
The heat trend will persist into Monday, with tropical or even equatorial nights (25ºC in Jaén) and highs again around 40ºC in the Guadalquivir Valley. From Tuesday, June 2nd, a gradual decrease in temperatures is expected, with highs settling around 35ºC in Córdoba, 34ºC in Sevilla, and 32ºC in Jaén by Wednesday, June 3rd.
