The celestial phenomenon will cross the Strait of Gibraltar, impacting areas such as Gibraltar, the Costa del Sol, and various towns in Andalusia around 10:45 am. Unlike the previous eclipse, which occurred over a century ago, this event promises a significantly longer duration of totality in certain locations.
Parts of Andalusia will experience more than four minutes of complete daytime darkness, far exceeding the duration of recent eclipses. Cities including Malaga, Cadiz, Sevilla, Granada, and Almeria, along with the African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, will lie within the path of totality. Gibraltar, specifically, will witness four minutes and 32 seconds of complete daytime darkness.
Occurring in mid-summer, the eclipse will feature the sun high in the sky, ensuring optimal viewing conditions. The partial phase will commence at 9:30 am across the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while the totality will sweep across the country's south between 10:46 am and 10:53 am.
Following its path over Spain, the lunar shadow will continue towards North Africa, Egypt, the Red Sea, and Saudi Arabia, concluding in the Indian Ocean. Astronomers confirm that southern Spain will be Europe's sole vantage point for the total phase, with the rest of the country experiencing a partial eclipse of at least 70% obscuration, according to data from the Spanish National Geographic Institute.
This 2027 spectacle is part of a historic 'Eclipse Trio' for Spain, which includes another annular solar eclipse on January 26, 2028, characterized by a visible 'ring of fire' when the moon does not fully block the sun.
