The mayor of Vícar, Antonio Bonilla, has issued a proclamation to promote the tradition of olive harvesting among the town's residents. The initiative aims to keep alive a family custom passed down through generations.
Free access to municipal olive groves is authorized during the harvest season. The only limitations are a maximum of ten kilos per family unit and the requirement to harvest respectfully to avoid damaging the trees. Harvesters are responsible for their own personal protection and for any incidents or accidents.
“"It is important to keep alive this old custom of the people of Vícar, who generation after generation, used to go during the autumn months as a family activity to the farmhouses and estates where olive trees abounded to participate in the olive picking tasks."
This citizen practice has been permitted for over two decades, concentrating particularly in the Huerto de los Olivos of Puebla de Vícar. This area has dozens of olive trees and houses the Museo del Olivar vicario. It is estimated that there are around 300 olive trees in the municipality, with a potential yield of approximately 5,000 kilos of olives.
Municipal olive groves are distributed across various green areas of the municipality, including the vicinity of IES Villa de Vícar in La Gangosa, the surroundings of the Pabellón de Deportes de Los Llanos, and the bulevar Ciudad de Vícar, where 25 olive trees were planted in 2019.
