The theater group Torreón de la Vela from Adra organized a gathering with the cast of their recently premiered play, Usted puede ser un asesino (You Could Be a Murderer). During the celebration, the opportunity was taken to thank the local mayor for his trust and support, as well as the Culture Department and the responsible councilor for their contribution to theatrical development.
As an exclusive preview, the association presented the mayor with the first poster for the upcoming Historical Reenactment, titled Don Luis de Tovar: Assault on Adra Castle. This event, scheduled for October 17 and 18 in key outdoor locations in Adra, will recreate the Turkish assault on the castle, the capture of the fortress, and the death of Captain D. Luis de Tovar, followed by the reconquest by the militias of Alpujarra and Berja. The initiative is a dream of Francisco Espinosa and is embraced with enthusiasm by all participants.
In addition to the historical reenactment, the organization has announced new theatrical projects. Due to the success of Usted puede ser un asesino, the play will return to the stage on August 27 at the San Fernando School Sports Center. For spring 2027, another play by Alfonso Paso, Los Palomos, will premiere, promising laughter and surprises. The “jewel in the crown” will arrive in autumn 2027 with the performance of Mariana Pineda by Federico García Lorca, a work that, according to the association, will leave no one indifferent.
The Torreón de la Vela Cultural Association, a non-profit organization, aims to promote and disseminate local culture and history. Its activities focus on three pillars: historical reenactment, theater, and hiking, thus covering a broad cultural spectrum.
The reenactment of the assault on Adra castle, commemorating the events of October 14, 1620, will detail the attack by Turkish pirates, the death of Captain D. Luis de Tovar and thirteen soldiers, and the subsequent arrival of the militias from Berja and Alpujarra to expel the invaders. The event will take place amidst the remains of the castle walls and towers, staging the battles and the captain's burial in the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Adra, featuring period costumes and rigorous historical advice.
