The extraordinary plenary session, convened urgently in El Ejido, proceeded swiftly. After Francisco Góngora's resignation as mayor was officially announced due to his appointment as delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Almería, the process was completed in under half an hour. Officially, José Francisco Rivera Callejón, who previously served as first deputy mayor, is now the acting mayor.
In his speech, the former mayor Góngora summarized the reasons for his decision, stating that events had accelerated in recent days and that accepting the position of Government delegate made it incompatible with his mayoral duties. He acknowledged it was not an easy decision but marked the end of a significant period in his life. He added that it is beneficial to make way for renewal and new aspirations with renewed efforts.
Góngora expressed gratitude for the work carried out over the past years, including those with whom he had disagreements. He wished the incoming mayor the utmost success, stating that the mayor's success benefits El Ejido.
Following Francisco Góngora's remarks, spokespersons from the various political groups bid farewell to the mayor, who had led the council for the past 15 years. Despite political differences, they highlighted his willingness to listen, his commitment to solving problems, and described him as a person 'with a big heart and incalculable human values,' according to councilwoman Maribel Carrión.
Subsequently, the new acting mayor, José Francisco Rivera Callejón, adjourned the session. The entire council gave a standing ovation to the now former mayor Francisco Góngora, who is set to be sworn in this Friday as the new delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Almería.
