The town of Vélez-Málaga is preparing to host 'Ubuntu Zircus: Everyone Against Bullying', a significant educational and musical project. Over 1,000 students from more than twenty schools in Málaga and Granada will participate in five performances at the Teatro Lope de Vega on May 29th, 30th, and 31st. The aim is to leverage the power of art to raise awareness and educate against school bullying.
This project, which has involved students throughout the academic year, extends beyond the artistic realm, fostering emotional learning and critical thinking. Professor Alejandro Burgos from CEIP Clara Campoamor in Alhaurín de la Torre explains that the work is integrated into music or art classes, incorporating anti-bullying prevention.
'Ubuntu Zircus' is the latest offering from the socio-educational and musical project 'Somos Ubuntu', established in 2018 to drive social transformation through art. Under the direction of Juan Manuel Alonso, the initiative will embark on a national tour with 23 concerts, utilizing music, theater, and dance as tools for change.
Following its premiere in Madrid, the musical arrives in Málaga. Across Andalusia, over 4,000 young people will engage in this experience, which will continue at the Gran Teatro de Córdoba and the Cartuja Center de Sevilla in June. The play focuses on the story of Rari, the son of a legendary clown, who confronts pressure and mockery in a circus environment, promoting community, bravery, and mutual support.
The musical, with a libretto by Alberto Frías and music by Juan Manuel Alonso, features original songs with the central message: “Bullying is only overcome together.” The Ubuntu philosophy, “I am because we are,” is reflected in a shared experience aimed at social change.
Organizers highlight that the project enhances self-esteem, improves classroom coexistence, and promotes more inclusive and creative education. The final performance in a grand theater is considered a life-changing experience for children, offering them the chance to be part of a large, professional production.
