Málaga appeals for blood donations to maintain summer reserves

The Málaga Transfusion Center launches an appeal to ensure hospital supply due to the usual drop in donations during summer months.

The Málaga Transfusion Center makes an urgent appeal for blood donations to ensure reserves during the summer, a period when donations typically drop by 20%.

The Transfusion, Tissues, and Cells Center (CTTC) of Málaga has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood before going on vacation. The goal is to maintain an adequate supply for all hospitals in the province, as healthcare activity does not stop during the summer months.
Francisca Guzmán, a promotion technician at the center, warns that "illness does not go on vacation." Hospitals require blood continuously for surgical procedures, oncological treatments, accidents, and other medical emergencies. Therefore, it is essential to have sufficient reserves in July and August.
The Andalusian Transfusion Network has initiated the campaign 'My summer saves lives' to remind citizens of the need to donate during the summer months. Guzmán emphasizes that "transfusion centers do not close for holidays" and points out that the center's website provides information on schedules and locations of mobile units traveling throughout the province.
Blood donations typically see a drop of approximately 20% during the summer. This decrease coincides with an increase in population in coastal areas and the arrival of visitors, which can also raise healthcare needs. In Málaga, about 250 daily donations are required to supply healthcare centers.
Blood cannot be manufactured artificially; the only source is voluntary and altruistic donation. A donation, lasting about 20 minutes, can save up to three lives. The requirements are minimal: be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh over 50 kilos, and be in generally good health. It is recommended to consult medical staff with any doubts about treatments or health conditions.
The CTTC serves the transfusion needs of all public and private hospitals in the province of Málaga. Guzmán stresses the importance of constant participation so that blood is always available for patients, without them having to wait.
Although reserves are currently guaranteed, the center insists that there is no need to wait for an urgent appeal. "It is a daily necessity," says Guzmán, thanking the usual response from the people of Málaga. It is advised to wear comfortable clothing, not to donate on an empty stomach, drink plenty of water, and avoid direct sun exposure or strenuous activity before and after donating.
This Saturday, July 4th, the Transfusion Center at the Civil Hospital will be open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. On Monday, July 6th, the hours will be from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Mobile units will also be available in Torre del Mar (next to the old tram stop) and in Rincón de la Victoria (Avenida del Mediterráneo, next to the taxi stand) on Monday, July 6th.
Guzmán concludes by encouraging the people of Málaga to donate before, during, or after their holidays, reminding them that "up to three lives can be saved" with this gesture.
