Water reserves in Málaga's reservoirs have reached an optimal level, nearing 581 hectometres cubic, representing over 96% of their total capacity. This figure contrasts sharply with the situation two years ago, when reserves barely exceeded 150 hectometres cubic, and ensures supply for an estimated period of three and a half years, until 2030.
This calculation is based on an average annual consumption of 159 hectometres cubic across the province, including 47 from the capital, 90 from the western coast, and 22 from Axarquía, excluding agricultural use. The improvement is attributed to an unusually rainy start to the hydrological year, which allowed the province to overcome the drought in March and lift restrictions affecting several municipalities.
Currently, the stored water stands at 581.18 hectometres cubic, the best figure in the last decade, approaching 600 hectometres cubic, a level only surpassed in 2011 and 2013. The Guadalteba reservoir is at 100% capacity with 153.58 hectometres cubic, as is the Guadalhorce, storing 125.92 hectometres, and Limonero, with 15.9 hectometres.
The Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir, in Ardales, is at 96.8% capacity with over 64 hectometres cubic. The Concepción dam, which supplies water to the Costa del Sol, records the highest rainfall with 755 litres per square meter and is at 94.4% capacity, with 54 hectometres. On the other hand, the Casasola reservoir, in Almogía, is at 65.5% with 14.2 hectometres cubic, maintaining an additional safety volume.
The most remarkable case is that of the Axarquía reservoir, La Viñuela, which was still at a severe drought level at the beginning of the year. After being considered a "dead" reservoir two years ago (at 7% of its capacity), intense rainfall in January and February has brought it to almost 93% in May, with 152.8 hectometres cubic. This figure represents its third historical maximum, surpassing the 135 hectometres of June 2005 and approaching the 156 of April 2013. Its historical record was in February 1988, with 170 hectometres.
