A study by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, using data from the INE, indicates that 70% of residents in the capital city of Malaga inhabit neighborhoods with an average low income, defined by annual per capita consumption income below 19,500 euros.

A report from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, conducted between 2022 and 2026 using data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) from the 2021 population and housing census, reveals that nearly 70% of the population in Malaga capital resides in census tracts with low incomes.
According to the study, 312 out of the city's 436 census tracts (72%) fall into this reduced income bracket, housing 403,885 of the 578,063 registered inhabitants. Census tracts are territorial divisions established by the INE.
The study defines 'low incomes' as per consumption unit below approximately 19,500 euros annually. 'Medium incomes' range between 19,500 and 30,200 euros, and 'high incomes' exceed this figure. The income per consumption unit is calculated by dividing the total net household income by the number of consumption units.
Malaga is classified among Spanish municipalities where between 50% and 80% of census tracts show incomes below 19,479 euros, and between 20% and 50% fall within the 19,479 to 30,229 euro range.
The study's map places low-income census tracts in broad areas such as Cruz de Humilladero, Bailén-Miraflores, Palmilla, Ciudad Jardín, Carretera de Cádiz, and parts of Churriana and Campanillas.
Another 99 census tracts (22.7%) correspond to medium incomes, with 142,449 residents (24.6% of the population). These areas include parts of the Center, Teatinos, Colonia de Santa Inés, Atabal, the western coast (like the Carpena area), Pedregalejo, and El Candado.
Finally, 23 census tracts (5%) correspond to high incomes, with 30,148 residents (5.2% of the population). These areas include zones like La Malagueta, El Limonar, Cerrado de Calderón, and some parts of the Historic Center.
In the Andalusian context, Malaga capital shows the highest percentage of census tracts in the low-income bracket (72%), ahead of Huelva (70.6%), Córdoba (67.6%), Torremolinos (67.4%), Almería (66.4%), Cádiz (58.9%), Sevilla (53.7%), Jaén (50.6%), and Granada (42.2%).
This data is part of the Catalogue of Vulnerable Neighborhoods, a tool from the Observatory of Urban Vulnerability, resulting from agreements between the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda. The catalogue has been updated since its inception with data from the 1991, 2001, 2011, and 2021 censuses.
