Mayor Antonio Fernández and the district mayor of Villaricos, María del Mar Rico, walked with residents to present the "fantastic result" of the works, which have transformed the old entrance into a modern urban boulevard.
The project, financed 65% by the Town Hall of Cuevas del Almanzora (over 800,000 euros) and 35% by the Provincial Council of Almería, has revitalized the AL-7107 road, enhancing the areas around the Castle and the main roundabout.
The new boulevard prioritizes mobility and accessibility with wide pedestrian sidewalks and a metal walkway that improves traffic flow and parking organization. It also highlights local history with new corten steel totems and thematic signage about the archaeological and fishing heritage, executed under preventive archaeological control.
The intervention includes the renovation of low-energy lighting, new urban furniture, and landscaping consistent with the maritime environment. An accessible bus stop shelter has been installed, overhead telecommunications networks have been buried, and sanitation and supply networks have been renewed. The area around the Castle has been refurbished with pedestrian earth flooring.
This boulevard is the first milestone in a more ambitious urban strategy, conceived in the EDUSI plans, to create a continuous green and pedestrian corridor along the entire coast. The Town Hall will collaborate with the Provincial Council of Almería and the Junta de Andalucía to extend the future boulevard from Vera and Palomares to Villaricos.
