The Malaga town of Algarrobo has once again staged the dramatic events of September 1811, when the bravery of its inhabitants prevented the municipality from being razed by French troops during the War of Independence. This unique historical reenactment festival, which mobilizes almost the entire local population, attracted numerous visitors from Andalusia and abroad.
The origin of the celebration dates back to September 21, 1811, when local guerrilla fighter José Segovia ambushed a French column. The reprisal ordered by the French battalion commander was halted by the intercession of local authorities and the inhabitants themselves, thus preventing the town's destruction.

The reenactment includes other passages from the municipality's memory, such as the capture of local bandit Rafael Segovia in 1821, which gave rise to the 'sack man' legend, or the exploits of outlaw Manuel Mergares in 1895, who respected funds raised after an earthquake.
Citizen involvement is a key driver of the festival. Residents wear artisanally made period costumes and decorate facades, turning the historic center into a meeting point. For many residents, like Zoraida García, it is the most important date of the year, a day of intense community.
Federico Camacho and María del Mar Marfil, other residents, highlight the celebration's distinct character compared to traditional fairs, emphasizing the opportunity to chat and socialize with locals and visitors, with the participation of businesses, bars, and associations.
The scale of the reenactment has attracted groups from all over Andalusia, such as the Benamejí Bandits Association from Cordoba, which actively participates in river skirmishes. Its president, José Melero, highlights the display of gunfire and the combat's visual appeal for the audience.
With a large turnout and high hotel occupancy, Algarrobo demonstrates how the event that almost destroyed it in 1811 has now become the greatest symbol of unity for its people.
