The performance, scheduled for 8:30 PM, is completely sold out, with approximately 150 people set to enjoy this theatrical proposal created in the province of Jaén by Juan Antonio Anguita, Javier Martínez, and Rubén Román.
Written and directed by Anguita, and performed by Martínez and Román, the play blends black comedy, drama, and scenic thriller elements to analyze "the limits of humor, public exposure, and the culture of cancellation from an uncomfortable and current perspective," according to its creators.
The story begins with a seemingly simple situation: David Pichardo, a comedian at the peak of his career, is preparing to go on stage when José Luis Buendía, a somewhat insecure journalist, attempts to conduct a poorly timed interview. What starts as an encounter between artist and journalist evolves into an increasingly tense confrontation, where nothing is as straightforward as it initially appeared.
“"Cancelado talks about the culture of cancellation and the hypocrisy surrounding it. It doesn't aim to defend those who have done wrong, but rather to lay some cards on the table and look at the problem from different angles."
The team further noted that "it's a play to have a good/bad time, like when you go to see a horror movie, only here it's not horror: it's something else." They emphasized preserving the play's mystery during promotion, stating, "The less the audience knows, the better. The powerful aspect of the play is discovering it little by little."
The play establishes an antagonistic relationship between its two main characters, placing the audience in an uncomfortable zone without offering easy answers. This production marks the first time these three creators from Jaén have collaborated in this format: Juan A. Anguita handles the script and direction; Javier Martínez plays David Pichardo and is involved in production and distribution; and Rubén Román portrays José Luis Buendía and also contributes to the production team.
After a collaborative work process spanning over a year, including regular rehearsals at the Casa de la Cultura de Torreperogil with the support of the local council, the company is now looking to distribute 'Cancelado' to other venues and municipalities in the province. Their aim is to sustain a play that, according to its creators, "helps reflect on a very current topic without sacrificing humor, tension, and surprise."
