The city of Huelva invites a journey into the past with the exhibition 'Archivos Huelva. doc. Shared Heritage', on display in the Plaza de la Constitución until June 21st. The exhibition, organized for International Archives Week, features a curated selection of documentary and photographic materials contributed by the Huelva City Council, the Provincial Council, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Port Authority, with the collaboration of the College of Architects.
During the inauguration, the territorial delegate for Culture, Teresa Herrera, took the opportunity to urge the Ministry of Culture to complete the new Provincial Historical Archive, a project that has been under construction for over fifteen years and is "absolutely necessary" for the citizens of Huelva.
“"It is absolutely necessary that this archive, which has been under construction for more than fifteen years, be completed as soon as possible so that the people of Huelva can have a cultural institution that will benefit them all, and which has suffered more than a decade of blockage and paralysis."
Herrera emphasized the importance of sharing documentary heritage, stating that it "belongs to everyone" and allows for understanding societal evolution. The exhibition presents over forty panels with reproductions of high-value historical documents and photographs, bringing key moments and figures closer to the public.
Among the displayed images are photographs of the seaplane Plus Ultra and its crew on the Huelva Estuary, the 1926 commemorative arch, the inauguration of the Monumento a Colón at Punta del Sebo, the ferry Francisco Montenegro, and the Fiestas Colombinas at the Muelle de Levante. Photos of the construction of the IES La Rábida and the Municipal Laboratory Disinfection Pavilion are also featured.
The exhibition also includes significant documents such as the founding act of the current Huelva Port Authority, the poster for the 1892 fourth centenary, city establishment guides, the project for the Gota de Leche building, and the plan of the former Gas Factory.
The president of the Port Authority, Alberto Santana, highlighted that archives are "fundamental to knowing our history, our identity," and noted the collaboration between the four institutions to present the exhibition. Meanwhile, the vice-president of the Provincial Council, Alberto Fernández, stressed that history is composed of "thousands of lives and stories that generate a common identity."
The councilor for Culture of the Huelva City Council, Nacho Molina, underscored how archives and images help us to "understand the historical importance of Huelva" and the need to preserve this heritage to build the future while maintaining the province's identity.
