Huelva PSOE criticizes capital's low request of 1.4 million for storm damage funds

Socialist spokesperson Enrique Gaviño laments the 'lack of ambition' from Huelva City Council compared to other municipalities seeking more funds.

Huelva's PSOE criticizes the capital's City Council for requesting only 1.4 million euros to repair storm damage from 2026, deeming it insufficient compared to the over 80 million available for the province.

The spokesperson for the Provincial Executive of the PSOE of Huelva and general secretary in the capital, Enrique Gaviño, has highlighted the Spanish Government's response to damage caused by the 2026 storms in the province. Gaviño stated that Huelva's municipalities will receive "more than 80 million euros in subsidies," but lamented that the capital's council only requested 1.4 million, a figure similar to municipalities like La Palma, Almonaster, Jabugo, or Hinojos.
As indicated by Gaviño at a press conference, these aid funds cover "one hundred percent of the amounts requested by the town councils" and will be granted in advance to carry out repairs "immediately." The socialist contrasted the Executive's "commitment" with the "lack of ambition" and "lack of desire to solve citizens' problems" that, in his opinion, Mayor of Huelva, Pilar Miranda, has "demonstrated."
Gaviño questioned whether the requested funds are sufficient to address damage to sports facilities, dampness in municipal buildings, or actions in neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding, such as La Ribera or Cristo del Amor street. He criticized the mayor for the granted aid being "exclusively for the asphalt paving of some streets, leaving out other damages," and announced that the opposition "will demand explanations from Miranda" to ascertain "if the asphalting plan she boasts about will be paid entirely by the Spanish Government without contributing a single euro of its own."
The socialist leader detailed "more significant" allocations that other municipalities in the province will receive, including three million euros for Paymogo, four million for Valverde del Camino, another four million for Villalba del Alcor, and six million euros for Puebla de Guzmán. The coastal towns of Lepe and Almonte have been the "most benefited," with nearly 16 and 24 million euros, respectively. In Almonte's case, this amount is in addition to the state's full funding for the "destroyed promenade" and extraordinary sand contributions to Matalascañas beach.
In addition to these municipal infrastructure funds, "more than one million euros were allocated by the Central Government earlier this year for farmers in Andalusia and Extremadura affected by the storms in January and February."
Regarding the halt of the Huelva-Zafra railway line for repair works, Gaviño acknowledged that the interruption of public service is "not pleasing" to the party but defended the necessity of the intervention following storm damage. He called for "maximum speed" in the technical work, emphasizing the "articulating, emotional, and tourist" value of a line that "structures the coast-mountain connection" and which, after a significant investment by the Government, had resumed service before suffering damage.
Looking ahead to the constitution of the Andalusian Parliament, Gaviño warned that the acting president, Juanma Moreno, "will have to demonstrate whether his Andalusianism is real or feigned" when forming the Board and negotiating the future Executive with Vox. "We greatly fear that Mr. Moreno will cling to the presidential seat in San Telmo by yielding to all of Vox's demands," criticized the socialist, warning of the "risk" that "sensitive" areas such as the management of migrants "could fall into the hands of a party with radical postulates contrary to the Andalusian spirit."
