The association La Calle Mata, a citizen group focused on the homeless issue in Granada, has urged the City Council to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of high temperatures on the health of the most vulnerable citizens, particularly those living on the streets.
During a rally outside the council building, the association demanded the establishment of day centers to serve as thermal shelters and night centers for dignified rest. They also called for the creation of permanent, high-tolerance shelters and the provision of affordable housing.
“"Madam Mayor and municipal government team of our city, the high temperatures are already here. Homeless people need help, funded by everyone's taxes, to have a more dignified life. Soften your hearts, fulfill your obligations as rulers, and start working for the citizens, the ordinary people, the most vulnerable."
Concurrently, a written request has been submitted to the Mayor's office seeking detailed information on the planned measures, referencing the mandatory municipal obligation under the Andalusian Protocol for coordination on the effects of excessive temperatures on health.
Loli Ortiz, a representative for La Calle Mata, stated that "nothing has been done so far to anticipate the effects that high temperatures, which are already here, will have on the most vulnerable population." She added that despite the municipal government's claims of satisfaction with their work, the association's perception is that this population "has never been worse attended than now under the current government team."
