The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has taken another step in the development of the GR-43 highway, which will connect Granada with Córdoba and, subsequently, with Badajoz. The upcoming tender for the design and construction of a section of approximately 2.86 kilometers, located between kilometer markers 417.5 and 420.147, has been announced with an allocated budget of 1.7 million euros (VAT included).
This project aims to address current deficiencies in the connection node between the GR-43, the N-432 road, and the regional road A-336. This area experiences an average daily traffic intensity of around 13,000 vehicles and presents operational difficulties for the interconnection of these three routes. The project includes the extension of the GR-43 to link with the A-336, with the goal of improving traffic conditions and road safety in the area.
The new route will involve crossing the Velillos river and the high-speed line LAV Antequera-Granada. Additionally, a new junction will be designed between the GR-43 and the A-336 road, and the existing connection between the highway and the national road will be remodeled. The latter is a critical low-safety point where fast-moving vehicles often encounter heavy goods vehicles and agricultural machinery.
This initiative complements other ongoing projects for the creation and improvement of the A-81 highway, the corridor between Extremadura and Andalusia. These include the informative study for the section between Puerto Lope and Cuesta de Velillos, currently in progress, and the recent tender for the project to convert the N-432 section between Cerro Muriano and Córdoba into a highway. For residents of Granada, the A-81 will begin at Cuesta Velillos, a point accessed via this section of the GR-43.
The tender announcement will be published soon in the Official State Gazette (BOE). The Government has stated that this investment is part of the estimated 34.3 million euros for future works on this infrastructure. This section signifies the conversion of three kilometers of the N-432 into the new GR-43 highway, connecting to the A-81, a highly requested project to enhance safety and traffic flow.
The GR-43 is also expected to inaugurate a two-kilometer section this year between Granada capital and Atarfe, completing the initial part of the highway that currently ends in Pinos Puente. Work on the structure that will serve as a distribution hub is practically finished, progressing rapidly for completion in the first half of 2026.
