The Granada European Capital of Culture 2031 Consortium has approved the hiring of Calio Alonso, a cultural manager, pianist, and educator from Granada, as the new artistic director for the Granada 2031 project. This strategic appointment addresses a key recommendation from the European evaluation committee and marks a significant step forward in the project's technical and cultural structure.
The Consortium stated that this appointment aims to enhance the conceptual, artistic, and programmatic development of the bid, positioning Granada as a European hub for contemporary culture, heritage, creation, and international dialogue.
The Councillor for Culture of the Granada City Council, Jorge Saavedra, praised Alonso's "enormous preparation, experience, and international projection," highlighting his deep connection to the city and his top-tier career spanning Europe and Latin America. Saavedra emphasized the importance of rigorously adhering to the European commission's commitments to build a solid and professional structure.
Calio Alonso possesses extensive international experience in cultural management, artistic direction, and music production. With a degree and Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Granada, and further studies in music and cultural management in Barcelona and Germany, he has held significant roles such as delegate director of projects for the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), tour manager for the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, assistant director of the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance, and cultural manager for the Alhambra and Generalife Board. He has also collaborated with prominent international cultural institutions.
In recent years, he has been actively involved in Costa Rica as the artistic director of the National Lyric Company, leading major opera productions, international training programs, and cultural cooperation projects focused on music and performing arts. His profile combines management, artistic vision, international expertise, and a strong connection to Granada, considered essential elements for guiding the cultural definition of the Granada 2031 bid in this new phase.
The new artistic director will be responsible for coordinating and developing the project's conceptual and curatorial direction, while also fostering international alliances, collaborative networks, and multidisciplinary projects aligned with European values of innovation, citizen participation, sustainability, and cultural diversity.
