The Ayuntamiento de Isla Cristina has presented the inaugural edition of the 5K Isla Cristina, a new sporting event intended to become a fixture on the local calendar. The race has seen high demand, filling its quota of 350 participants.
The presentation was attended by the mayor, Jenaro Orta; the Councilor for Sport, Álex Boa; and representatives from the club El Zancajazo, Enrique Rodríguez and Santi Muros. The event will take place on Saturday, September 26th, at 11:00 AM, featuring a five-kilometer urban route designed to showcase the town's most representative locations.
Councilor for Sports, Álex Boa, emphasized that the race aims to highlight not only sport but also the town itself, blending sport, tourism, and culture. The initiative stems from the collaboration between the Municipal Sports Service and El Zancajazo, following the discontinuation of the traditional Milla Urbana (Urban Mile).
Boa praised the runners' response, with 350 registrations, and the preparation efforts involving Local Police, Civil Protection, and other municipal services, alongside local collaborators and businesses like DEUS Fit.
Enrique Rodríguez, from El Zancajazo, explained that the idea arose after the Milla Urbana ceased and highlighted the City Council's support. The route is designed to be fast and accessible for all types of participants.
Santi Muros, also from El Zancajazo, stressed the event's local identity, with trophies inspired by the Lighthouse and medals featuring elements unique to Isla Cristina, aiming to provide participants with a souvenir of the town.
Mayor Jenaro Orta commended the runners' initiative and the combination of sport and promotion for Isla Cristina, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the City Council, clubs, businesses, and citizens.
The five-kilometer route will pass through the Sports Marina, Avenida del Carnaval, and El Faro (The Lighthouse). The start will be at the Municipal Pavilion, and the finish line at the new Athletics Tracks, where awards, raffles, and music will follow.
The organization has focused on the local identity, with Lighthouse-inspired trophies and unique medals. Ernesto Algarra will serve as the event's speaker. The race requires the involvement of municipal services such as Public Works, Local Police, and Civil Protection, in addition to volunteers.
