More than 1,800 Infant and Primary students returned to classrooms in Isla Cristina today, marking the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, with local authorities present and the educational community's renewed enthusiasm.

Isla Cristina welcomed 1,800 students from Infant and Primary education for the start of the 2026-2027 academic year. Classes commenced in the town's eight Infant and Primary Education Centers (CEIP), including those in Pozo del Camino and La Redondela. The official opening ceremony was held at the CEIP Sebastián Urbano Vázquez, selected this year by the Municipal Education Delegation.
Representatives from the City Council, including First Deputy Mayor Francisco Zamudio and Education Councilor María del Carmen Beltrán, accompanied the center's director, Charo Pulgar, and her management team. The director highlighted the enthusiasm and eagerness of the educational community for this new year, which will feature various projects aimed at "creating a better society."
Students from 4-year-old Infant to sixth grade of Primary are joining today between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, while the youngest, 3-year-olds, have a flexible adjustment period. Director Pulgar summarized the center's goal for the year as "changing perspectives, changing mindsets, and bringing out the best talents in our children."
Deputy Mayor Isabel López emphasized the work done in recent weeks to ensure the educational centers are "safe, well-maintained, and suitable spaces." Maintenance, painting, and repair work has been carried out in several schools, including specific tasks in the library of CEIP Sebastián Urbano Vázquez.
Education Councilor María del Carmen Beltrán reaffirmed the municipal commitment to education and communication with the schools. She stressed the need to increase investments and called for greater involvement from the competent administration for larger-scale projects, such as renovating the perimeter fencing at Sebastián Urbano.
Francisco Zamudio, First Deputy Mayor, underscored that "education is not an expense, it is an investment" for societal improvement. He valued the collaborative efforts of administrations, management teams, teachers, families, and students, noting the shared responsibilities between the City Council and the Regional Government of Andalusia.
The school year's commencement extends to over 4,000 students in Isla Cristina throughout September. Municipal Early Childhood Education centers already welcomed their students on September 3rd. On September 15th, students from Secondary, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, and Adult Education will join, along with those from the Elementary Music Conservatory and CEPER Miramar.
