Trebujena: Cádiz's 'Gallic Village' Where the Right Doesn't Campaign

Left-wing parties dominate the electoral landscape in this Cadiz locality, relegating the right to a secondary role.

In Trebujena, Cadiz, the electoral campaign is marked by the absence of right-wing parties, who are focusing their efforts on other towns due to the predictable victory of the left.

The avenues of Chipiona and Sevilla in Trebujena present an atypical electoral scene. Out of 91 distributed election posters, 38 support the 'Por Andalucía' coalition led by Antonio Maíllo, 32 back the candidacy of María Jesús Montero and the PSOE, and 21 promote Adelante Andalucía with José Ignacio García. Surprisingly, there are no appeals from parties on the right of the political spectrum.
The presence of the Popular Party is limited to four panels featuring Juanma Moreno on interurban bus stop shelters, contracted through an external company. VOX, meanwhile, has no visible presence and is not expected to actively participate in the polls. This situation stems from Trebujena's historical trend, a territory where the right has never managed to win in democratic elections.
With a population of approximately 7,000 inhabitants, Trebujena, known for its high number of healthcare professionals, typically divides its council seats between Izquierda Unida (seven councilors) and the PSOE (six councilors). In the 2023 general elections, Sumar achieved its only victory in the province of Cádiz in this locality.
The example of the past Andalusian elections is telling: while Juanma Moreno's PP achieved an absolute majority at the regional level, in Trebujena it only garnered 15% of the votes, compared to 46% for 'Por Andalucía' and 22% for the PSOE. This makes Trebujena a 'Gallic village' resisting the favorable trend for the PP in the province.
A Popular Party member, who prefers to remain anonymous, explains that the party does not have a headquarters in Trebujena and understands the lack of effort in the local campaign, perceiving a greater distance from regional leaders compared to local elections. The PP has not organized official events in the municipality, although they plan an electoral walkabout with provincial leaders.
The mayor, Ramón Galán, attributes the historical support for the left to 'closeness' and the feeling that the population feels heard. He highlights the direct management of municipal services, such as water, which saves costs by not seeking corporate profit. He also emphasizes the town's 'tradition of struggle,' recalling the protest march to Jerez during the pandemic to prevent the redirection of its reference hospital.
