The Motril Council reinforces its commitment to the conservation and enhancement of the Fábrica del Pilar and the sugar industrial heritage. The action adds to investments aimed at recovering the factory complex and expanding its cultural and tourist offerings.
The mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, accompanied by the Councilor for Sugar Industrial Heritage, Madelin Banqueri, and the delegate councilor for Maintenance, Infrastructure Management, and Public Works, José Balderas, visited the start of the works on the Sugar Warehouse building.
The Fábrica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar is a clear example of the city's rich industrial heritage. The Motril council is committed to the maintenance and investment in the infrastructures of this area.
The intervention in the Sugar Warehouse building, also known as the Miguel Giménez Yanguas Exhibition Hall, focuses on the west and north walls, as well as the interior flooring. The objective is to consolidate the underlying ground of the foundation and the slab of the Sugar Warehouse Nave, which show defects due to differential settlements. The investment, close to 40,000 euros, will be financed with the Council's own funds.
Mayor Luisa García Chamorro highlighted the importance of "developing an active policy in which we value the heritage that has so marked the city's history," emphasizing the need to invest not only in the construction but also in the maintenance of these buildings for their "use and enjoyment."
García Chamorro stressed that the Fábrica del Pilar is "the crown jewel" and the "flagship" of the city's museums. She recalled that in recent years, a millionaire investment has been made, partly financed by European funds and partly by the Council's own funds, for its improvement.
Within the Integrated Action Plan (PAI) ‘Motril, identity and evolution’, co-financed by the European Union through FEDER, actions are planned for the development of the factory complex. These include the rehabilitation of the Manufacturing building for its incorporation into the Sugar Industrial Museum and the implementation of museographic resources.
The European investments, amounting to two million euros with a municipal contribution of 15%, will enable the future "great sugar museum of Southern Europe" to become operational with guided tours and the Mill Train.
The Fábrica del Pilar is consolidating itself as a key space for the future tourism and cultural development of Motril. The expansion of visits in September encourages continued efforts to enhance this heritage. The factory's development benefits from external funding and ongoing restoration work and the drafting of new projects.
Additionally, through Next Generation EU funds, the Council acquired Meta3D glasses to promote the Sugar Museum through the activity "La Fábrica del Pilar goes to the street."
The mayor reiterated the "municipal government's commitment to the Fábrica del Pilar as a city flagship," thanking the work of the Sugar Industrial Heritage department and its team in making this site an industrial and historical benchmark.
