The Motril City Council held a posthumous tribute ceremony for Nicolás Navarro García with the inauguration of a plaque in his honor. The distinction, approved by the Municipal Plenary on September 25, 2025, is located in the Plaza de la Cruz Verde, on the facade of the School of Arts of Motril.
The event was attended by the mayoress of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, members of the municipal government team, friends and family of Nicolás Navarro, and the director of the School of Arts, María Dolores Ortega Zamora.
Mayoress Luisa García Chamorro emphasized that this tribute is a responsibility of the City Council to thank those who, through their work and passion, have contributed to making Motril a better city. The plaque honors the figure of Nicolás Navarro García, convinced that his legacy deserves to remain alive in the places we share daily.
Nicolás Navarro García was a fundamental figure for Motril, leaving a significant educational, cultural, and social legacy. After starting his career as a technical engineer, he dedicated over 26 years to the School of Arts, eventually becoming head of studies and director, consolidating it as a benchmark for training and creativity. He also participated in the creation of the Amigos de Ramón Portillo Association, promoting the Ramón Portillo International Painting Contest.
The mayoress stressed that while no recognition can fill the void left by a loved one, this gesture serves to remember that Nicolás Navarro holds a special place in the city's memory and in the hearts of those who shared his commitment. The plaque will serve as a reminder of his indelible mark.
The widow of Nicolás Navarro, María del Carmen Díaz, expressed her gratitude to the city for recognizing her husband's legacy, highlighting the importance of the tribute as an acknowledgment of a lifetime dedicated to the city's education, culture, and society.
The director of the School of Arts of Motril, María Dolores Ortega Zamora, shared the emotion of attending this recognition, noting the honor of having the building's facade bear the plaque, remembering the great work and human qualities of Nicolás Navarro.
The placement of this plaque next to the School of Arts of Motril highlights the significant human dimension of Nicolás Navarro García, serving as a permanent reminder of his commitment to the culture, education, and future of Motril.
