Under the slogan 'She is protected but her skin is not', the campaign took place at Puerta del Mar beach with the aim of informing beachgoers about the importance of adopting safe habits against solar radiation. It was emphasized that sun damage accumulates over time and that skin has memory.
Volunteers from AECC Almuñécar conducted the workshop 'Skin has memory', offering key recommendations: avoid sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, cover head and skin with appropriate clothing, use sunscreen with SPF 50 periodically, and pay special attention to moles and skin lesions, consulting a healthcare professional for any anomalies. The need to prevent sunburns, especially during childhood and adolescence, was highlighted.
Statistics underscore the importance of these initiatives. In Spain, an estimated 7,881 new cases of cutaneous melanoma were reported in 2024, with increasing incidence. In Andalusia, the Regional Government of Andalusia recorded 3,021 new cases of skin cancer in 2025. AECC identifies ultraviolet radiation as a fundamental preventable risk factor.
The mayor, Juan José Ruiz Joya, along with the Councilor for Health, Carlos Ferrón, and councilwomen Lucía González and Mari Carmen Reinoso, participated in the event. They were joined by the president of AECC Almuñécar, Conchi García, and about ten volunteers.
Ruiz Joya emphasized the importance of "learning to coexist with the sun responsibly" in a municipality like Almuñécar, thanking AECC for its information and awareness efforts to prevent future health problems.
Carlos Ferrón, in turn, highlighted that "prevention is one of the most important tools" and noted that sun protection should be a daily precaution, not just for beach days, especially during peak sun hours.
Conchi García stressed that "every sunburn and every excessive exposure counts," valuing the volunteers' work in promoting healthy habits that can prevent diseases.
