The main square in the center of Torremolinos has undergone a significant renovation aimed at transforming it into a more pleasant and functional meeting point. The project, which extends to several surrounding streets such as Emilio Esteban and Antonio Girón, incorporates elements like shaded areas, native vegetation, interactive fountains, and updated lighting, along with accessibility improvements.
The proximity to the railway tunnel was a key factor in the design, limiting the planting of large trees and the installation of heavy structures. As a solution, light pergolas and raised planters have been used, preserving existing trees and incorporating palm trees and Mediterranean shrub species with low water consumption.
The project, designed by architects María Vargas García and Ana Baena Azuaga from the Varba studio, aims to be more than just a transit point. Seating areas, children's play spaces, and water and light features have been distributed throughout. A linear fountain and a dry fountain with water and light jets add dynamism and coolness, although the initially planned water curtain could not be installed due to load limitations over the railway passage.
The design is inspired by 'rebalaje,' utilizing curved layouts, pergolas, and night lighting that transforms the space's appearance. The intervention includes adjustable LED lighting and fountains with recirculated water, with the goal of promoting commercial and hospitality activity in the surrounding areas and reducing its function as a mere passageway.
The inauguration was attended by the mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, the regional delegate, Patricia Navarro, and the government sub-delegate, Javier Salas. The renovation is part of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan 'Torremolinos, Smart Paradise' and has been financed with European Next Generation funds.
