This program, initiated in 2024, focuses on accompanying elderly individuals and combating unwanted loneliness through a network of volunteers coordinated by the Harena Foundation. The agreement renewal was formalized after a meeting between representatives of the City Council, Harena, the 'la Caixa' Foundation, and CaixaBank.
The Mijas City Council, through its Departments of Elderly Affairs and Equal Opportunities and with the collaboration of local associations, works to identify and communicate cases of lonely elderly people. The mayor, Ana Mata, highlighted that loneliness is 'one of the great scourges that society suffers' and assured that more than 40 people in this situation have already been attended to in the municipality.
“"We hope to continue taking many more steps in this direction."
Angie Moreno, manager of Harena, explained that loneliness affects both the emotional and physical spheres of the elderly. Volunteers accompany them weekly for two hours, with a commitment to do so for at least a full year, providing essential social contact for those who have no one.
The program offers in-home companionship, walks, and group activities such as meals, games, and workshops. These initiatives aim to help beneficiaries meet others in similar situations, avoid victimhood, and expand their social network.
“"The goal is that people who have not chosen to be alone can feel accompanied."
The 'la Caixa' Foundation promotes this project to reach all individuals who need to feel accompanied.
