The Marbella desalination plant will implement significant upgrades set to reduce its energy consumption by approximately 30%, lowering costs for the public company Acosol and minimizing its environmental impact.

The public water company for the Costa del Sol, Acosol, is undertaking energy efficiency measures at the Marbella desalination plant, located on the road connecting to Istán. These works are expected to cut consumption by around 30 percent, leading to reduced expenses for the entity and a smaller carbon footprint for the facility.
The project involves refurbishing the seawater pumping system with two new pumps, upgrading the intermediate pumping system through nine variable frequency drives, and modifying two product water pumps. The chemical cleaning system will also be adapted, along with the electrical system through the construction of a new electrical room.
Power capacity will be adjusted, the capacitor bank reconfigured for reactive compensation, and the control system adapted. Preparatory work began last February. While the new custom-made pumps, ordered from international manufacturers, are currently in production, Acosol is progressing with other phases of the modernization.
The total execution period is 22 months, comprising three months for project design, 18 for construction, and one for commissioning. The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental aims to optimize energy consumption for a more sustainable desalination process, targeting a minimum of 1.40 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter.

"This action will allow us to reduce the desalination plant's energy consumption, increase its operational efficiency, and reinforce water supply guarantees in a context marked by the need to optimize water and energy resources through planning and joint work between administrations, which will improve the quality of life for citizens and tourists visiting the region."

Manuel Cardeña · President of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental

"This investment represents a significant step within the continuous improvement strategy for the Costa del Sol's hydraulic facilities, focusing on more efficient, sustainable infrastructure prepared to meet future demands."

Matilde Mancha · CEO of Acosol
The total investment amounts to eight million euros, with three million funded by a grant from the Andalusian Energy Agency, part of the Junta. This project is part of a 350 million euro investment plan driven by Acosol, solidifying the desalination plant's role as a key asset in managing drought periods.
