The Mayan Monkey chocolate shop, located in Plaza Virgen de la Peña, is a production space where everything from chocolate bars and bonbons to ice cream and packaging is handcrafted. Since opening in 2012, it has established itself as one of the area's most sought-after children's activities.
The main attraction is its workshops, designed for children aged three and up. Using real ingredients, molds, and over 50 toppings, youngsters learn to make their own chocolate. Sessions, lasting from 25 minutes to over an hour, cost from €19.95. Participants take home their creations, which can range from chocolate dragons and donkey lollipops to colorful bonbons, also introducing techniques like piping fillings and working with tempered chocolate.
Adults also get involved or enjoy a coffee while the chocolate sets. The factory roasts its own specialty coffee on-site and offers fresh cakes, artisan ice cream made with organic Galician milk, and homemade sorbets.
A key aspect of their offering is ethical commitment. All chocolate is made with single-origin, ethically sourced cacao from Peru. The factory holds the Slave Free Chocolate certification, making it the only one in Spain with this recognition, a fact that brings both pride and reflection.
Even without booking a workshop, visitors can take free daily tours through the glass-fronted factory, observing the chocolate-making process with no obligation to buy. The establishment, located just 30 minutes from Malaga, is open daily from 10:30 to 18:00, with extended hours in summer.
