The Fuengirola City Council has executed a total of €800,270 through actions included in Axis 4 of the 'Fuengirola + Tourism. Towards a more sustainable and intelligent destination' Tourism Sustainability Plan. This plan, 100% financed by European funds, aims to reinforce the city's tourism competitiveness through digitalization, improved mobility and road safety, carbon footprint reduction, and plan management optimization.
The initiatives are structured into four main areas: digitalization and Smart Tourist Destination (DTI), mobility and road safety, sustainability and carbon footprint reduction, and management and control of the plan itself. A key project is the GIS-City Twin or Digital Twin of Fuengirola, with an investment of €371,816, integrating georeferenced information for more efficient city planning and management.
In terms of mobility and road safety, €308,337 has been allocated to traffic control and calming, incorporating fixed speed control cabins, pedagogical radars, laser speedometers, and an electric vehicle. Concurrently, the parametrization of the Smart Tourist Destination software has been completed for €16,699, advancing the methodology of the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations and the UNE 178501 standard.

Axis 4 also incorporates actions to reduce the environmental impact of Marenostrum Fuengirola, allocating over €33,000 to calculate, reduce, compensate, and verify its carbon footprint for the 2024 and 2025 editions.

Other actions include adaptation to the DTI model according to UNE 178501 (€15,881) and technical assistance and audit work for the plan's execution (€50,806 and €2,879, respectively). The goal is for Fuengirola not only to use technology but to apply it to improve management and the tourist experience, reinforcing its competitiveness as an intelligent, sustainable, safe, and innovative destination.
