The 'Ruta de las Recoveras', held since 2017, recalls the bravery of women who, during the post-war era, walked the 50 kilometers separating Casares from La Línea to sell or trade farm products for scarce items like chocolate, coffee, or sugar at the Gibraltar border.
This hiking route, reconstructed by cartographer Manuel Galán with help from descendants of these women, offers the possibility to complete the entire route or sections. Registrations are now open, with a limit of 100 participants.
Interested individuals can register at the Casa Natal de Blas Infante, by calling 600 413 121, or by sending an email to turismo@casares.es.
The program of activities for October 23 and 24 includes, in addition to the route, a meeting on Friday, October 23, between relatives of the recoveras from Casares and the matuteras from Jimena, women who also traveled to Gibraltar to obtain and sell products in their towns.
The initiative is organized by the Casares City Council, in collaboration with the Andalusian Association for Solidarity and Peace (ASPA). Notably, Ana Mora, author of the comic Gertrudis, la recovera, which narrates her grandmother's story, is participating.
