This strategic plan, which involves an investment of 34 million euros over ten years, seeks to raise the current tree coverage from 18% to 34%. The initiative includes planting 3,000 trees annually, prioritizing areas with scarce vegetation and optimizing the management of existing tree pits to maximize environmental benefits.
Among the key avenues targeted for intervention are Arroyo del Moro, Carlos III, Ollerías, Agrupación de Córdoba, Ronda de Los Tejares, Gran Capitán, Gran Vía Parque, Los Chopos, and Menéndez Pidal. Each of these routes presents specific challenges and opportunities, ranging from replacing short-lived species to improving infrastructure for tree root development.
On Arroyo del Moro Avenue, for instance, the goal is to incorporate large-sized trees and enhance biodiversity, while on Carlos III, there will be a gradual replacement of poplars with more adapted and long-lived species. Ollerías Avenue, identified as a heat island, will see widened sidewalks and the planting of large trees.
The plan also includes improving the health of existing trees through health diagnostics, optimizing pruning, and implementing innovative urban solutions such as permeable pavements and urban drainage systems (SUDS). Ronda de Los Tejares, for its part, will protect its unique plane trees and improve the conditions of its tree pits.
“"The project aims to create continuous tree pits and vegetated spaces; incorporate mulch and plant substrate for microbial soil improvement; decompact adjacent land to increase the colonizable surface for the root system; and implement a third vegetation layer for soil protection and improved biodiversity and tree health."
Gran Vía Parque Avenue and Los Chopos Street will also receive special attention, with the aim of improving soil conditions and allowing optimal tree development. Menéndez Pidal Street, located in a health and university area, will be transformed into an intra-urban green corridor to mitigate its heat island status.
