The Provincial Council of Córdoba, through the Provincial Company of Waste and Environment (Epremasa), has launched an investment of 5.2 million euros to establish a new selective collection system for the organic fraction (FORS). This project, utilizing the brown bin, will extend to the 72 municipalities within the province that have agreements with the institution for domestic waste management.
The president of the Provincial Council of Córdoba, Salvador Fuentes, highlighted that the initiative will serve a population of 354,541 inhabitants and 169,000 homes. He noted it as a strategic action made possible by the European Union's Next Generation funds, supplemented by the provincial institution's own contribution.
The new system includes the initial installation of 800-liter rear-loading bins in 53 municipalities. In the remaining 19 municipalities with underground systems, 240-liter bins will be integrated within specific covers to maintain the urban aesthetic. Fifteen collection routes have been planned, with seven initially operational.
The investment for the bin installation phase amounts to 1.6 million euros. Additionally, approximately 3.5 million euros will be allocated for the treatment of this organic matter, with the establishment of a transfer plant in Dos Torres, which will be complemented by the plant in Montalbán.
Concurrently, Epremasa has launched an information and public awareness campaign to publicize the brown bin's installation and its correct usage. The initiative specifically targets large producers, such as businesses, and social entities to promote more sustainable recycling.
