Citizens of Granada, like all adult Andalusians, are preparing to elect their representatives to the Andalusian Parliament on May 17. In this electoral event, the Popular Party faces the challenge of revalidating the majority obtained in the previous call, which in the case of Loja would mean maintaining the victory achieved in the last regional elections.
On the night of June 19, 2022, the Popular Party emerged victorious in this municipality of Poniente, securing 4,257 votes, representing 46% of the total. This result left the Socialist Party (with 2,469 votes and 26.7%) closer to the third political force than to the popular party. The Vox list took third place with 1,418 votes (15.3%), significantly outperforming Por Andalucía, which did not reach 400 votes.
With this victory, the PP, whose list was led by a prominent figure, unseated the PSOE, which had maintained undisputed leadership in the regional elections held throughout the 21st century. For example, in 2018, 3,291 residents of Loja (34.3%) voted for the PSOE, compared to 2,650 (27.6%) who voted for the PP. On that occasion, Ciudadanos positioned itself as the third force with 1,536 votes (16%), relegating Vox to fifth place, while Por Andalucía obtained 890 votes (9.2%).
Four years earlier, in 2015, the PSOE's victory was even more decisive, with 4,909 votes (46.8%), while the Popular Party garnered 3,156 votes (30.1%). On that occasion, Podemos consolidated as the third force, although without reaching a thousand votes (853 votes, 8.1%).
The results for the purple party in 2015 were significant, as they managed to position themselves among the main parties in the Poniente municipality for the first time. In 2012, the third force was Izquierda Unida (774 votes, 7.3%), while the PP (4,183 votes, 39.8%) and the PSOE (5,073 votes, 48.3%) maintained a similar distribution to that of 2008, a year in which the PSOE obtained more than half of the votes. However, the PSOE's best result this century was recorded in 2004, when the party achieved over 61% of the votes, compared to 30% for the PP and 3% for Izquierda Unida and the Partido Andalucista, respectively.
