The Provincial Council of Granada approved in its ordinary May plenary session a budget modification amounting to 752,440.67 euros. These funds will primarily be used for the rehabilitation of two rooms on the ground floor of the emblematic Castillo de La Calahorra and for the development of a musealization program for this property. The initiative aims to promote the conservation, protection, and dissemination of this significant provincial heritage.
The approved budget also includes actions for the enhancement of the Convent of La Concepción in Guadix, interventions within the Senda Litoral (Coastal Path) project, and an extraordinary contribution to the Granada European Capital of Culture 2031 candidacy.
María Vera, Deputy for Presidency, Provincial Strategic Projects, Cultural Asset Management, and Demographic Challenge, highlighted the Council's commitment to projects that not only preserve heritage but also transform it into a driver of development and opportunities for municipalities. "The commencement of actions at La Calahorra Castle represents a very important step forward in continuing to recover one of Granada's most unique heritage sites," she stated.
Specifically, the investment in La Calahorra Castle totals 191,440.67 euros. Of this amount, 173,440.67 euros will be allocated to the rehabilitation works of the two rooms, while 18,000 euros will fund the creation of a basic musealization program to enhance the monument's knowledge and dissemination, consolidating its cultural and tourist potential.
Regarding the Convent of La Concepción in Guadix, 336,000 euros will be allocated to tender the execution project for future conservation and restoration works. Additionally, a basic musealization program will be developed to define the future use of the building as the Provincial Museum of Holy Week.
The Senda Litoral project will receive 75,000 euros to improve the accessibility and environmental integration of the Granada coastline through new interventions on a specific section of the route. Lastly, the Provincial Council will contribute 150,000 euros to the consortium for the Granada 2031 candidacy, strengthening technical, organizational, and cultural programming efforts after successfully passing the pre-selection phase.
