The Los Yanquis road, officially known as CA-224, is nearing its reopening after more than seven months of closure. The Algeciras City Council has announced that the road could be operational again even before the end of June, a piece of news that brings significant relief to thousands of drivers affected by daily traffic jams.
Since October 15, 2025, users have had to endure significant detours and traffic jams due to the works on the new South Access to the Port of Bahía de Algeciras. Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce reported after a meeting with technicians and work managers that there will be no more total closures, but rather provisional diversions to allow work to progress.
The local government assures that the main access road to the port and the diversions towards Málaga will be operational by June 30, meeting the deadlines. The reopening of the Los Yanquis road, a strategic connection for neighborhoods such as Los Pastores, La Aldea, El Faro, or Getares, has become a priority demand from residents.
Public discontent grew with the failure to meet initial deadlines, which had predicted a reopening by mid-December 2025. However, the council maintains that the most complex phase of the project is in its final stages. Once the main infrastructure is enabled, works on ramps and accessory actions will continue.
Landaluce has emphasized the importance of avoiding further delays, especially with the upcoming Operation Crossing the Strait and the peak summer tourist season, periods that significantly increase traffic in Algeciras and towards Tarifa. The mayor has thanked drivers for their understanding and patience to complete this strategic project.
