A spokesperson for the San Roque city council has criticized the Junta de Andalucía for the alleged loss of European aid designated for the construction of 177 social housing units for rent in the Huerta Varela area. This situation is viewed as a missed opportunity to address the growing demand for affordable housing in the locality, particularly among families registered as housing applicants.
“"This situation represents a serious irresponsibility on the part of the regional administration, as the lack of action will prevent numerous families from accessing dignified housing."
The city council had previously requested the Junta to include a specific allocation for this project in the Andalusian Budgets for 2026, but this request was not considered. Furthermore, it has been noted that the land designated for these developments already possesses all necessary infrastructure, such as sidewalks, roads, and sanitation networks, meaning only the construction project itself remains to be developed.
The planned actions were part of the Nuevo San Roque initiative and included two developments initially funded by European financing. One of these involved 45 homes on Avenida del Tercer Centenario, for which the tender went deserted, while the second comprised 132 homes in Huerta Varela, on plots owned by the Andalusian Housing and Rehabilitation Agency (AVRA).
The municipality of San Roque has experienced significant population growth, now exceeding 35,000 inhabitants, and the local government aims to reach 50,000 residents before the year 2050.
