The railway route between Ronda and Algeciras will be interrupted until autumn 2027 due to works on the so-called railway highway. Adif has commenced the project, which has an investment exceeding 345 million euros. The initiative aims to adapt the line for a new freight transport system, reinforcing the role of the port of Algeciras and enhancing infrastructure reliability.
The extensive works involve adapting 34 tunnels, 104 overpasses, and 18 metal bridges to allow the passage of semi-trailers. Specifically, on the Bobadilla-Algeciras line, 21 tunnels spread across the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz will be modified, increasing their cross-section and shifting the track towards the center.
Additionally, work will be carried out to consolidate and stabilize slopes between Almargen and Setenil, in the province of Málaga, using piles and rock dams to reduce incidents. Furthermore, infrastructure renewal will take place on sections of the Córdoba-Linares line, benefiting passenger traffic.
Due to the incompatibility of the works with rail traffic, the line will be suspended from early September until autumn 2027. Renfe has implemented an alternative transport plan for passengers and will reroute freight trains through other corridors.
Adif has coordinated the planning with operators, logistics companies, and administrations to minimize the impact. The interventions will also improve conventional services, increasing the reliability and regularity of both passenger and freight trains. Other enhancements, such as expanding passing sidings and modernizing signaling systems, are also progressing.
