The historic Church of Santa Marina in Andújar has hosted the opening ceremony of the II International Chess Tournament 'Ciudad de Andújar', bringing together over 130 chess players from 24 nationalities until July 3rd.

The event, aiming to establish Andújar as a sporting benchmark, includes prominent figures and broad international representation. The Deputy of Electronic Government and Internal Regime, Inés Arco, along with municipal officials and the president of the Andújar Chess Club, Javier Ruiz, presided over the opening.
Inés Arco highlighted the tournament as a "top-level sporting event" and an opportunity to promote the image of Andújar and the province of Jaén, attracting visitors and boosting economic activity. The Provincial Council sponsors the initiative, viewing sport as a "tool for development and social cohesion."

"We believe in sport as a tool for development and social cohesion, and initiatives like this allow us to demonstrate that Jaén is an open, dynamic province capable of organizing international events of this kind."

The deputy congratulated the organization and collaborating entities, welcoming the participants and wishing them enjoyment of the competition and all that Andújar and the province have to offer.
Prior to the official inauguration, a simultaneous exhibition match was held featuring David Antón, a twelve-time Spanish champion and currently considered the best active Spanish player. This exhibition is part of the parallel activities planned to bring chess closer to the public until July 3rd.
The tournament's schedule also includes evening tournaments, interactive activities for children and families, and rapid chess ('blitz') competitions on the terrace of the Casa Azul, designed to enhance public engagement.
Following the success of its first edition, which the Spanish Chess Federation ranked nineteenth nationally, this event is solidifying its position as one of the most significant fixtures on the Spanish chess calendar.
