The intervention covers 1,100 meters of greenway up to the municipal term of Luque. The mayor, María Jesús Serrano, highlighted that the objective since 2023 was to regularize the land, owned by ADIF, and agree on its lease, with a view to future expropriation to make it municipal property. "Once leased, it was necessary to condition the space, carry out cleaning work, and protect the wall," explained Serrano, adding that the project was included in the PSTD to promote inland tourism, cultural, heritage, archaeology, religious, and nature tourism in Baena.
The renovation includes the installation of kiosks that the City Council will tender as an administrative concession to offer drinks and bicycle rentals, thus facilitating the greenway route. The area is equipped with security cameras connected to the Local Police and LED devices for night visibility. The mayor called for civic responsibility for the conservation of public space.
The intervention, which also included signage using its own resources, involved reforestation with trees to create shaded areas. The Councilor for Parks and Gardens, David Bazuelo, detailed that invasive species such as ailanthus have been removed and replaced with a linear forest of hackberries and alders. This will be completed soon with the Emplea Verde program, extending tree planting from the motorhome park to the recreational area to improve green spaces and combat climate change.
For his part, the Councilor for the Services Unit, José Andrés García, explained that in the service area, a wall has been projected, the rainwater evacuation outlet has been rehabilitated with riprap, and potable water and electricity supply have been provided to auxiliary buildings. Restrooms, a sealed tank for waste collection, and fountains for people and pets have been installed.
García emphasized that maintenance will be carried out on the entire greenway. This year, it included a Profea project from the Provincial Council thanks to efforts by the Baena mayor's office. "In the coming years, we will continue to have Profea work on this greenway because not only is investment important, but also maintenance," he stated.
