For three days, representatives from Cádiz carried out an intense agenda of institutional, business, and cultural meetings. The main objective was to strengthen the historical ties between both territories, highlighting the figure of the navigator who completed the first circumnavigation of the planet.
The delegation was officially received at the Getaria Town Hall, where thanks and publications on the history of Cádiz were exchanged. Gastronomy also played a significant role, with a meeting at the renowned Asador Elkano, where discussions were held on culinary tradition and marine products, culminating in a tasting of specialties.
In the fishing sector, the delegation visited the Getaria Fishermen's Guild, where the importance of the sea economy in local identity and the historical maritime links between the Basque coast and Cádiz were highlighted. They also learned about the artisanal process of Cantabrian anchovy production at a local cannery.
The program included visits to the Elkano Space, an interpretive center dedicated to the navigator, and the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum. Additionally, potential collaborations for the protection and enhancement of maritime heritage were explored, a priority given the recent loss of historical vessels in the Bay of Cádiz.
“"There is a deep historical, cultural, and maritime connection between Getaria and Cádiz, two territories united by the universal figure of Elcano and a shared naval tradition."
The Cádiz con Elcano association, supported by the Unicaja Foundation, emphasizes that the figure of Juan Sebastián Elcano maintains a prominent symbolic and cultural presence in Cádiz, from spaces and institutions bearing his name to his projection in Spanish naval history, especially through the Navy's training ship.
