The event was attended by members of the municipal government, relatives of Diego Rodríguez, representatives of the social and economic fabric of Chiclana, and José Luis Gutiérrez, author of the book ‘Anarchism in Chiclana. Diego Rodríguez Barbosa, worker and writer (1885-1936)’.
The work, created by Chiclana artist Antonio Vela with an investment of 10,890.55 euros, pays tribute to Diego Rodríguez Barbosa, affiliated with the CNT, who was executed on August 28, 1936, at the site known as “Alcantarilla del Águila”.
“"We are here in an act of justice and recognition for the figure of Diego Rodríguez Barbosa and his companions of free thought. We regret that so many murders of people who thought freely and democratically occurred."
The mayor highlighted the importance of research in uncovering the hidden truth about those events and thanked Antonio Vela for the creation of the sculpture, which reflects the barbarity of certain regimes and the fight for a better society.
María del Carmen Rodríguez, granddaughter of Diego Rodríguez Barbosa, recalled the 90th anniversary of her grandfather's death and expressed her joy at her city's tribute. She thanked the mayor, José Luis Gutiérrez for the book, the CNT, and the Association for Historical Memory of Chiclana for recovering the names of victims of the dictatorship. She expressed the hope of finding her grandfather's remains to give him a dignified burial.
José Luis Gutiérrez explained the biography's development, detailing Rodríguez Barbosa's personal, social, and cultural concerns, his activism, and the significance of anarchism in the town.
