The works for the new Municipal Center for the Homeless in El Puerto de Santa María are in their final phase. The facility, located in the premises of the former Social Emergency Center on Acuario street, in the La Florida neighborhood, will feature 22 rooms and renovated common areas for the care of homeless individuals in the municipality.
The mayor of El Puerto, Germán Beardo, and the Councilor for Social Welfare, Carmen Lara, recently visited the facilities along with representatives from the awarded company, BOOM AEC S.L., to check the progress of the work. According to the City Council, the project will provide the city with a stable residential resource within the municipal social services network.
The center is designed as a temporary accommodation space with common areas adapted for coexistence and the development of social intervention programs, aiming to offer not only shelter but also professional support focused on personal recovery and social integration.
The project proposes an individual and group intervention model focused on personal stability and the prevention of homelessness, with lines of work including health support, access to employment, promotion of personal autonomy, and social participation.
The total investment amounts to 305,225 euros, of which 249,254 euros come from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan funded by European NextGenerationEU funds, with the remainder being a municipal contribution. The City Council has indicated that the resource will be integrated into the municipal social care network for at least 20 years.
The mayor highlighted that the center is part of the measures to strengthen the municipality's social resources, while the Councilor for Social Welfare explained that it will enable more personalized programs for homeless individuals and those at risk of social exclusion.
The building had previously housed social emergency services but has been adapted and renovated to meet the new care approach, with improvements to rooms and common areas.
El Puerto de Santa María will thus have a specific resource to address the increasing social vulnerability, as warned by sector entities.
Once the work is completed, the City Council will specify the opening date and management model, expanding the municipality's response capacity to homelessness.
