Sierra Nevada Reinforces Cauchiles Ravine to Prevent Overflows

The ski resort will invest over 600,000 euros in emergency works to improve hydraulic capacity and safety.

The Sierra Nevada ski resort will undertake emergency works this summer in the Cauchiles ravine to prevent future overflows on the slopes and in the Mirlo Blanco area, following incidents recorded in February.

The works, with an estimated budget exceeding 600,000 euros, will last approximately four months. They will focus on the lower part of the resort, specifically at the end of the Río slope and on the side path of the Mirlo Blanco recreational area.
The main objective of this intervention is to optimize the hydraulic capacity of the existing drainage structures in the Cauchiles ravine. This aims to prevent future material damage and, crucially, to ensure the safety of visitors frequenting the aforementioned recreational area.
Last winter, the pipe channeling water from the Cauchiles ravine to the Monachil river became inoperative due to heavy rains in February. This event caused water to overflow onto the ski slopes, leading to various material damages on the Río slope and in the Mirlo Blanco area.
The proposed solution includes the implementation of drainage works designed to operate under free-surface flow conditions, incorporating the necessary coatings to prevent erosion and sediment transport. Additionally, the auxiliary or ‘bypass’ system located in the lower part of the ravine will be addressed.
The resort management has stated that all actions must strictly comply with the regulations of the Sierra Nevada Natural and National Park, as well as other current regulations. The companies responsible for the works are obliged to keep the natural environment «intact», limiting their impact to the work areas and avoiding discharges or waste in the zone.
