The international network of cultural landscapes of the Mediterranean and Middle East (Med-o-Med) has visited the municipality of Canjáyar to closely inspect the Villa María Garden-Orchard. This space has recently joined the entity, which brings together botanical gardens, plant diversity centers, and cultural landscapes from over 23 countries.
“"This is a privileged environment in our municipality where, through its association, significant work is carried out to preserve living history, as well as to disseminate the environmental and cultural heritage of Canjáyar."
During the visit, Med-o-Med representatives were accompanied by the mayor of Canjáyar and the garden's owners. In addition to touring the Villa María Garden-Orchard, visitors explored the town's streets, discovering emblematic places such as the old municipal laundry, the Church of Santa Cruz, the Cerro de San Blas, and the cantones viewpoints.
The Villa María Garden-Orchard, dating back to the late 19th century, houses a rich collection of agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental species, many linked to the Andalusian tradition. Among these are specimens of great botanical value and nearly two centuries old, such as the myrtle, cypress, laurel, and jasmine. Covering more than 1,400 square meters, it is the largest garden of its kind in the province of Almería and preserves typical architectural elements of the Alpujarran legacy, such as acequias, pergolas, and walls, in excellent condition.
