Almerian farmer Andrés Góngora has assumed the general secretariat of COAG with the firm purpose of defending the primary sector, placing special emphasis on the critical situation of dryland agriculture and the need for efficient water management.

After two decades of dedication to COAG Almería, Andrés Góngora now faces the national challenge of leading the agricultural organization. His main objective is to unify the diverse sensitivities and sectors that make up COAG at the state level, ensuring that the defense of the countryside, both in Almería and the rest of Spain, is a priority.
Góngora, who argues that positions of responsibility within COAG must be held by farmers or ranchers, has underlined the importance of the professional farmer or rancher model feeling identified with the organization. In this regard, he believes that PAC resources should focus on this model, recognizing the specific needs of professional agriculture, which is particularly representative in the province of Almería.
The new general secretary has highlighted the strength of collective demands, learned from his experience in Almería. "I never like to refer to myself as an individual, but as the representative of the collective," he stated. He celebrated having helped to dispel the myth of division among agricultural organizations in Almería, promoting collaboration in joint advocacy strategies.
Aware of the difficulties faced by sectors beyond horticulture, Góngora has pointed to his special concern for dryland sectors and extensive livestock farming, considering them the most vulnerable. "We must focus, above all, on certain areas that are having a very hard time. And there is the debate about water, which I believe will mark our first years because dryland agriculture is doomed without help," he stated.
Regarding the current campaign, marked by pests and trade agreements, Góngora acknowledged the resilience of Almería's fruit and vegetable sector, despite climatic incidents that have highlighted the need to renovate old greenhouses. The parvispinus pest in peppers and the call not to eliminate active substances without alternatives are key points. He stressed that Almería continues to supply European markets, demonstrating a capacity superior to that of third countries.
COAG firmly opposes trade agreements with third countries, such as Mercosur or Morocco, arguing that agriculture and livestock farming are always the bargaining chips. Góngora defended European food sovereignty against import dependency, criticizing that these agreements primarily benefit multinational corporations.
On the issue of water scarcity, Góngora expressed optimism regarding the renovation of the Carboneras desalination plant and other water resources. However, he demanded investments in irrigation, regulation, and improvements to desalination plants. He criticized the Junta de Andalucía's Drought Decree for prohibiting the construction of greenhouses on land with irrigation rights.
Regarding immigration, Góngora highlighted the integration of immigrant labor in Almerian agriculture, which has been fundamental to maintaining production levels. He noted as positive the phenomenon of immigrants and their children becoming farmers, although he stressed the need for social and rural integration policies.
Generational change is another pillar of his mandate. Góngora advocated for accompanying measures, a stable future of employment, and an agricultural insurance system that provides certainty. He emphasized the importance of contracts with stable prices and independent technical advice for young farmers.
Finally, he addressed the situation of livestock farming and beekeeping, sectors that also face difficulties. He demanded stable PAC aid for maintaining activity, especially in dryland areas. He mentioned the need for more veterinary advice and resources for Sanitary Defense Associations, lamenting the delay in blue tongue vaccination in Almería. He acknowledged the quality of intensive goat farming and the importance of beekeeping for pollination and the maintenance of crops like melon and watermelon.
